Charlesbridge, an independent publisher, seeks an organized and detail-oriented booklover to join our rights team as our Rights and Contracts Associate or Senior Associate. Charlesbridge currently operates under a hybrid in-office/virtual work schedule, requiring two days a week in our Watertown, Massachusetts office. This is a full-time, benefitted position. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to Massachusetts to qualify.

Description

Reporting to the Vice President, Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, the Rights and Contracts Associate/Senior Associate is responsible for licensing translation, book club, audio, electronic, and iconographic rights, as well as negotiating all creator contracts for Charlesbridge titles. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Pitches, negotiates, and prepares contracts for licensing deals for all domestic and some foreign rights, as well as permission requests
  • Tracks licensed rights and renewals of expiring licenses
  • Prepares materials for (and potentially attends) Frankfurt and Bologna international book fairs
  • Drafts, negotiates and finalizes all publishing contracts with creators and their agents
  • Updates and maintains Charlesbridge’s standard contract terms, best practices, and boilerplates
  • Organizes and leads weekly contracts meeting
  • Supervises Rights and Contracts Assistant

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or equivalent.
  • Previous paralegal, agency, or contract experience. Candidates with previous publishing experience particularly encouraged to apply.
  • A working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Works collaboratively with others in a team environment; takes ownership of, and pride in, building and maintaining relationships.
  • Detail-oriented professional who works well under deadline pressure; able to multi-task and change work focus as necessary to meet deadlines.
